Administering Medicines

While it is not our policy to care for sick children, who should be at home until they are well enough to return to the setting, we will agree to administer medication as part of maintaining their health and well-being or when they are recovering from an illness.

In many cases it is possible for children’s GPs to prescribe medicine that can be taken at home in the morning and evening. As far as possible, administering medicines will only be done where it would be detrimental to the child’s health if not given in the setting.

Parents must give prior written permission for the administration of the medication. Full details of dosage and when to administer must be recorded on the child’s medication register. This should be completed whenever a dose of medication is given by the named member of staff giving the medication and witnessed by a second member of staff. The parent will be asked to countersign the register when the child leaves the setting at the end of the session. The register should be monitored regularly to ensure any changes to the dosage or medication are recorded. Medicines should be stored in the original containers, clearly labelled, and checked regularly for best before dates.

All medication will be kept safely to ensure it cannot be accessed by any other child. Medication can be stored chilled in the fridge if necessary.

Extra training and support will be obtained for staff whenever necessary.
